Planning a Small Business Website: A Practical Checklist
A step-by-step guide to defining goals, audiences, content, accessibility, and launch requirements before building a business website.
Start with the job the website needs to do. List the actions visitors should be able to take, such as understanding a service, requesting a quote, or finding contact details. Give each audience a clear path and decide how you will measure whether those paths work. Gather the essentials before choosing a design: accurate service descriptions, real contact information, approved images, and answers to common customer questions. Organize these into a small number of clear pages. A concise site with useful, specific information is easier to maintain than a large collection of pages written only to fill space. Plan for mobile use, readable contrast, keyboard navigation, descriptive page titles, and meaningful link labels from the beginning. Confirm who will update the site, how enquiries will be handled, and which parts need ongoing maintenance. Before launch, test every form and link, review pages on different screen sizes, check spelling, and make sure privacy information is available wherever personal data is collected.
